Here’s where you want to go for Eclipse for 64-bit Java + 64-bit Windows, including Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7, or for any other “oddball” configuration not linked from their main download page:
- Eclipse Download List:
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/
From there you need to click through for a specific release. The most recent release is at the top of the first table; right now it points to:
- Latest Release List: Eclipse 3.5 (“Galileo”) Release Page
From the release page, you have to choose a platform and click on the http
link. That’ll then take you to the download page. For 64-bit Windows (x86_64) use:
- 64-bit Windows Zip: 64-bit Windows Zip File
I’m using the Windows (x86_64)
builds on Vista on both an Intel Core-2-based laptop and dual-Xeon-based workstation. It works with the 1.5 JDKs from Sun.
We have instructions on getting it running in our LingPipe Eclipse Tutorial. I’m about to add that you need to close the funny start page they have now, which wasn’t obvious.
This took some finding. Actually, it took a hint from Mike, because you certainly won’t find it by navigating, which will take you to:
- Eclipse Partial Download Page with Cute Graphics:
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/
which doesn’t have links to 64-bit versions of Eclipse for Windows. If you search for on their site, you get old bboard questions without answers. If you search for on Google, Yahoo, or MSN, only MSN has anything close to a helpful answer in the first 10 hits.

Hello, I was in the same doubt, but I find java6u4 amd64… Well… it works in my laptop (Intel Core Duo with Windows 7 x64 release 7100). Download it from: [Ed. please don’t link to .exe files, even with good intentions].

Sorry, the link seems broken… But try to search java6u14 64 bits… I have this version and i had downloaded from this link above… I so sorry but I can’t help.

I’m using “Windows (x86_64) (Supported Versions)”, which is the name of a download once you select a version from the page linked in the main blog entry. I’m using 64-bit Vista with two different Intel chips: dual Xeon quad core workstation and a single Core Duo in a notebook.

Just to say thanks for the info, and got this working on Windows 7 x64 RC1 with 64 bit JDK 1.6.
October 28, 2009 at 2:57 pm |
Chris – how did you get this to work? I have the 64 bit JDK 1.6 and when I tried running eclipse it gave me a status error of -1, which doesn’t tell me how to fix it.
May 22, 2009 at 5:55 am |
thanks so much for this blog entry. I was having trouble finding 64-bit Eclipse to run on my new Windows 7 config!

a great thanks!!!! I was searching for the 64bit version and I couldn’t find on the eclipse site : )

I have installed 64bit, but when try to add the server i not getting the server option, how can get the server, i need to connect to tomcat.

I had the same problem running Eclipse with a 64 bits JVM. I changed the eclipse startup params to run with a 32 bits JVM and it works now.
Use eclipse.exe -vm

Does anybody have a link to eclipse for x64 windows server 2003 SP2? I’m hopelessly stuck on 3.2.1, because I’m trying to get maven support working with IAM (or Q4E)? The one I have downloaded was:
eclipse-3.5M7-x86_64, but it cannot seem to be able to update itself via the update add site dialog.
August 18, 2009 at 4:35 pm |
Thank you for that post. Not being an expert in Java&co. I just assumed eclipse wouldn’t care about the pointer width of the underlying JVM and hence tried to run the 32bit eclipse on a 64bit JVM. -.-
September 7, 2009 at 5:22 pm |
Finally!
Have looked how to do this but as you only found some old forum questions about this… :-(
Seems to be get a decent performance boost in Vista 64 bit as well!
And can finally run eclipse with more than 1,2 Gb in windows! :-)

thank you for your helpful introduction!

Thank you, thank you, thank you…
I tried in vain to find the “official” way to get from eclipse.org to this download but alas, no luck. They link to 64 bit versions for cocoa and linux but not for windows.

This looks like the classic verison… Is there a Java EE Developer version in 64-bit?
January 19, 2010 at 1:05 pm |
I have a comment bellow. In a nutshell: Download the classic version, then add the EPP update site to download the JEE or any other package into it. It works like a charm for me :-)

Hello,
I am looking forward to use Win7_64bit and I am having doubts if I can install Eclipse cdt plugin (for c/c++) under it.
Did anyone tried it so far and maybe had a positive result? Big thanks in advance!

I have been able to get all the packages (JEE, C++, etc) to work the way the pre-built packages are available for 32 bit. What you do is follow these gentlemen advice for getting eclipse sdk for 64 bit with jdk 64. Once you do that, add this URL to your update sites:
http://download.eclipse.org/technology/epp/packages/galileo
This gives you ability to download any of the packages available on download page, I am using it to download JEE package and it works super.
January 16, 2010 at 9:25 am |
Hi !
Which of your both machines do you recommend for coding ? Dual Xeon or Intel Core ?
THanks
January 17, 2010 at 7:49 pm |
XEON are more pronounced as server based CPU’s while the “Core” series more reverently refers to desktop or client CPU’s. It really adds to the confusion as I had used tools to ID my Core 2 Duo and it was said to have two Xeon cores. They are similar in architecture but, the Core 2 series are scaled down models of the Xeon architectures.
Developing on a specialized CPU architecture is going to be based on a number of decision making models. Some simple thoughts to help you decide are: threading models, special features like hyper threading, virtual machine development, and specialty instruction sets like MMX.
The most important factor that you will address when developing will be the domain more so than the CPU like: server, desktop (client), thin client, or netbook (media devices). The domain will set parameters that you will have to work inside of regardless of the CPU allot of times as this defines purposing or scope.
It is really about what you want to accomplish and whom you will be doing it for but, basic CPU speed is generally the biggest selling point and now includes the number of cores the CPU has. It’s a toss up and really depends on preference anymore so its up to the individual doing the development.
Check out Intel’s web-site and compare different models of the XEONs and Core 2 Duos; etc. and pick the one that’s right for you. It’s all going to be x86/x86 64 bit for the most part anyway so, cross reference all the chips that impress you. Don’t kill yourself trying to figure something out — take your time and do it right.
You’ll enjoy your decisions much more if you take the time to think them through.

I downloaded the same version as the link ’64 bit windows zip’ listed on your post. I have an error that states ‘JVM Terminated. Exit code=-1’ whenever I try to open eclipse.exe. I tried opening eclipse.exe as administrator and I still have the same error message.

Do you have a 64-bit Java installed? When you do
java -version
in a shell, what do you see?January 19, 2010 at 12:12 pm |
@AI
Take a look at your java installation(s). You may have more than one and eclipse may still be seeing the 32 bit. That happens a lot when you install a public JRE part of java installations as they register themselves(putting their bin path in the PATH environment variable).
As a practice, I always set the argument in the eclipse.ini file to make sure my elcipse is pointing ot the jre (or jdk) that I want.
put something like this in eclipse.ini
-jvm
C:/Program Files/Java/jdk1.6.0_16/jre/bin/client/jvm.dll
January 19, 2010 at 12:14 pm |
Sorry, I meant -vm not -jvm
:-)

I’m considering Windows 7 64 bit OS and need to know if I receive a document from a person running a 32 bits OS / application. Can I still read and update that document and send it back to original user on their 32 bit machine so they can read/write to the same document?

@Baysam
It should be working. How is that it is not working? What does it say? I have had it for the past 6 months, 2 OS reinstallations!!
One quick fix for you if you could not figure out, would be to download spring tool suite, they have a glalileo installer for 64bit.
I will check back again tomorrow to see if you have any more issues :-)

The links in the post are all live. Start at the oddball config download link:

March 8, 2010 at 11:21 am |
I am not sure if I communicated that well, but you don’t go to the download link directly, but you add that to your update manager. First, you donload eclipse sdk for x64 from this link:
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.5.2-201002111343/index.php
Then use the link in your update manager:
http://download.eclipse.org/technology/epp/packages/galileo
Make sure to uncheck the “Group by category” as some packages would not show up coz they have not category set.
But be sure:
1- Have your java 64 be your default java
2-download the sdk, run it.
3-Use update manager to download the packages, they have a list of JEE, PHP, etc. that you can get from there.
Good luck.

Hi,
I followed the steps in the thread to install Eclipse on my windows 7 machine. Everything went through fine but I cannot see the ‘Server Runtime Enviroments’ under Windows-Preferences. Do I need to download any other package ?
Thanks
April 5, 2010 at 3:20 pm |
If you download the JEE package, it should contain the server stuff. I would double check, probably try it again on a fresh install and see.
Good luck
April 5, 2010 at 3:37 pm |
I don’t see a 64 bit version of the JEE package. I tried the link below.
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/
Is this the correct link ?
April 5, 2010 at 3:41 pm |
Go there:
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.5.2-201002111343/index.php
it usually is under project -> elipse project -> latest release -> and you will see a lit of all platforms.

to get jre6 64 plugin bit to run eclipse you may access to jre page download with I.E.(it’s stupid but true ).

would really appreciate a reply. Thank u.

I was using IBM WebSphere v6.0 (that actually uses Eclipse RAD) 32-bit on Win Vista and XP 32-bit PCs. Now I am on a Win 7, 64-bit PC. The prob. is I am restricted from heavy downloads in our company (> 25 MB), and hence unable to download Eclipse 64-bit RAD or any other web RAD tool. So I’ve installed my old Eclipse and made it ‘compatible’, and it is starting. But the real issue before me is getting Eclipse to start the web server (WebSphere in my case) -> it says ‘java class not found’. I tried downloading Tomcat 6.x and JRE 6.x (both 64-bit), but I do not know how to link them. I am not also able to make the Java class files ‘compatible’ in a similar way, as they are not a single application. Either I should somehow link the Eclipse to the existing Java files in a compatible mode, or I should be able to link it to a 64-bit JRE. In either case, how to go about it? Pl. help.
July 16, 2010 at 11:38 am |
This isn’t an Eclipse support site. I was just pointing people to the 64-bit distros because I couldn’t find them.
If you find class not found errors, it’s because the .class file or jar containing it is not on the classpath. I have no idea how to deal with that in Eclipse or deal with compatibility issues for versions.
